How long have you been online journaling? I started my LiveJournal account (

meepalicious) in 2003 but I had DiaryX and Blogspot accounts before that and an Expage site that functioned as a blog before that, so… 25 years, give or take?
Why do you like online journaling? I like that it's sort of private but sort of not, mostly a separate social world from my "irl" life where I can be more honest and open than I am with casual acquaintances. I like sharing my daily life, innermost thoughts, etc., and getting a glimpse into the lives of people I might otherwise never meet.
What are some of your hobbies? I like to crochet, take long walks around Tokyo, photograph my doll collection, write (poetry, picture books, romance novels, original character fanfiction (Hunger Games, His Dark Materials)), cross stitch, etc.

How long have you been online journaling? Only a few months, I started on Tumblr but it seemed like no one there was reading/blogging.

Why do you like online journaling? Someone I recently followed said "I write to feel like a person." I need to get my thoughts out of my head. Sometimes I even talk to myself, don't tell anyone. But for real, if I don't get the ideas out it hurts.

What are some of your hobbies? I'm an artist so all kinds of painting but mainly watercolor, all sorts of crafts like jewelry making and claywork. I recently got obsessed and slightly burnt out on crochet, I need to get new yarn and find a new project. I've started writing again, poetry and some fanfic, and I love to read when I have the attention span for it. I also make zines! And I like video games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, but also Fallout 76 and GTA online. Otherwise my hobbies are lurking at the mall where my partner works, seeing movies, and smoking too much weed. :P

Favorite bands/artists: Lord Huron and Tyler the Creator are my current obsessions, I also am particular fixated on Earl Sweatshirt and riot grrrl music.

Favorite TV shows: I have so many but right now I'm rewatching Community (ahem

communitytv) and watching and enjoying Legends of Tomorrow and Sense8 for the first time. I also watching wrestling but only AEW currently, I want to get into New Japan. Other shows I like are Buffy, Angel, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Fallout, Twin Peaks, Farscape and more I cannot remember.

Favorite movies: I recently watch The Matrix series for the first time and it's my favorite thing right now. I also really loved the new Superman. I have too many movies to list, honestly but I love horror, Lynchian type stuff and weird sci fi like Annihilation.

Favorite books: Annihilation, lol. And the entire Southern Reach series. We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and Observatory Mansions. I'm currently reading a compilation of Blacksad comics and I'm loving it so far.

Other fandoms: Does coding count? I've gotten really into web design.

Ah, I loved the Southern Reach! It is a must-reread for me every year. I already had hard copies, but I bought myself the 10th anniversary cover editions of the entire series last year, too. Have you read Absolution yet? What did you think of it?

I did read Absolution and I still don't know what to think of it. lol I respect him for writing it and I think it's cool to read more in the series. At the same time I don't know if it's needed? But he intends to write more and I can't say I'm upset. I think the longer time goes by after reading it, which is just a few months now, I appreciate it more. Some people didn't connect to Old Jim and his story but his was one of the most tragic of them all since he didn't even know if most of his life was real or put in his head.

I also liked Absolution more after giving it time to settle. I went in completely blind, so I expected a... sequel? In any case, I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was marketed as an exploration into the world of the Southern Reach. I spent much of my first read confused if any of these characters were tie-ins to the characters from the previous books (and I STILL don't know if Control is meant to be the Stranger like I first thought.) He's doing a follow-up comic, I think? It was posted on his sporadically active Reddit account.

I loved Old Jim and his 'daughter'; Lowry's POV was the hardest for me to read, both narrative and prose wise. Absolutely off his rocker. I'm glad this one is not the Lowry who came out of Area X, if the timeline of the first three books still 'exists'.

I knew it was prequel but it did take some time to get into it. I thought for the longest Control was the Rogue but I think it was supposed to be Whitby, because that's who Lowry finds at the end. (Hopefully we're not spoiling anyone who cares lmao)

Lowry's part was ridiculous and at first I was a little annoyed at having to read it but again I respect the idea behind it. I like it when writers take chances with their writing and that was a big risk. lol

I do! I think I'll be doing a reread of the whole series again in November. Maybe that will help some pieces click back together... if they're meant to be clicked together at all. Maybe Absolution gets better on a reread (absolutely the case for Authority. Went from 'wtf?' to a sleeper favourite. It's much better when I realized it's dull on PURPOSE in a metafiction way. The way the arrows on the carpet switch direction mid-book without any commentary still haunts me.)

I LOVED Authority and how different it was from Annihilation but also creepy in a different way. I didn't notice that! I need to reread them all, I only read them this summer but I could read them again. lol

I loved Authority, and I loved how Acceptance ended with that letter from Gloria. The heartache of knowing how these characters ended (in Annihilation) and peeling back the layers of their existence from the Southern Reach and the people who knew them in the next few books... I enjoyed it a lot. (I also felt like something was going on between Grace and the director. Tell me I'm not the only one, or am I just that into femslash?)

The cafeteria arrows hit me very hard, because 016 is the chapter where the border comes to the Southern Reach. Everything is confusing, the cafeteria wall has turned into meat, and... unremarked, the arrows on the carpet have reversed direction. Chills.
